A petite antique fob seal from the early Victorian era, carved from brilliant tangerine colored carnelian agate. The seal is capped with ornate sterling silver set with white chalcedony.
The fob would originally have been designed to be carved with a crest or monogram to the end, this one is worn smooth and plain. The pendant is much smaller than any I have seen before, minimal and lovely on its vintage sterling necklace chain.
+ all the Details
The stone is carnelian with attractive banding in shades of tangerine and fire orange. Unusually, the seal has a soldered silver wire around it, loosely fitted and allowing it to be suspended from a chain.
The cap is ornate sterling silver, shaped much like a capital on an ancient column. The silver is unmarked, testing as sterling and guaranteed as such.
The fob has a chamfered square shape at the base, .3 inches or 8mm square, 4mm in the center and the silver cap measures 9mm across.
Weight: 4.7 grams, vintage chain included
Age: early 1800s (very possibly Georgian)
As found, on a very good quality vintage sterling silver chain, 18 inches or 45.8cm long, stamped 'STERLING' to the clasp. Shown on a life size torso in photograph #4.
Condition: Excellent. All facets are crisp and sharp, the chalcedony is worn smooth but lovely. Wonderful natural patina to the silver cap and chain.
I could wax on for an age about this sweet darling. It is gorgeous and very unusual in this size and condition - I love it!
