An absolutely beautiful petrified wood and 9 carat gold Edwardian fob pendant. The drop displays that divinely simple ornamentation that is so typical of the era - perfect for this piece where the emphasis is on the contrast between shimmering stone and shaped gold cap.
+ All the details
The glossy stone is highly polished petrified or fossilised wood - ancient wood that has solidified over the ages to become a form of chalcedony. The color is superb, ranging from deep sea green on one side to golden ochre and bronze on the other. The pendant has wonderful chatoyance in light (chatoyance is the shimmering optical reflectance effect seen in certain gemstones eg. Tiger's Eye)
The fitted and hand engraved gold cap is unmarked 9ct gold (tested and guaranteed as such) with the warm rosy tint of old gold.
Length: 1.6 inches or 42mm with the suspension ring adding another 5mm to the drop from the chain.
Width: 15mm at the widest part of the stone and tapering to 10mm at the top. 4-5mm in thickness.
Fabulous worn as a fob ornament and lovely worn as a necklace. A new 20 inch or 51cm chain is supplied with the fob pendant, 1/20 14ct gold filled and stamped as such to the clasp.
Age: c. 1900
Condition: excellent. And I say this unreservedly - the fossilised wood is super glossy with no chips or scratches at all. The cap shows no signs of wear.
An unusual and incredibly beautiful fob ornament with a cap that has been purpose-made for the stone - this would be a beautiful addition to a collection.
