A wonderful Victorian locket in lustrous satin finish Vulcanite. The oval locket has perfectly smooth flat sides, wonderful to hold in the palm of the hand.
+ All the details:
Moulded from Vulcanite, also sometimes called 'ebonite', which was made by combining and heating rubber with sulphur. Invented in the 1840s, Vulcanite was very popular in Victorian jewelry as it was light and easy to wear.
The gold loop fixed into the locket and the suspension ring are testing as solid 9 carat gold.
The inside of the locket has two photo positions with bezels and new black lining cards. One original glass cover remains in place and the opposite side has a replacement film. There is a V shape cut into the locket below each photo position - this is to allow a pin to be inserted to lift out the frames.
The oval measures 1.25 x 1.57 inches (32mm x 40mm) 9mm in thickness.
Age: mid 1800s. At least 150 years old.
Weight: 9.6 grams without the chain
Condition: Excellent. No chips or scratches. The hinge is working perfectly, closes nicely and stays closed. Over time, Vulcanite tends to turn a deep olive green with exposure to light - this locket is still very black!
* Note that the hinge is fitted into the Vulcanite, part of the shell - the locket was never intended to open flat, more like 50° (see image 2) and though not fragile at all, should not be forced.
The Chain: The locket was found without a chain and included with purchase is a blackened brass chain 32 inches or 81cm long, an excellent match for the locket. Locket and chain are shown on a life size torso in photograph 3.
Wonderful for a collector of Victoriana but also just plain gorgeous to wear! What stuns me is how modern and new this locket looks on a long chain. Amazing to hold, soothing to handle and very, very beautiful.
