An exquisite little early Victorian locket that is gorgeous to see and handle and is completely reversible.
One side has a central machine engraved sunflower shape, with radiating curves of rich and glossy royal blue enamel. The other side has a concentric machined pattern.
A somewhat rare old beauty with the original bevelled glass covered receptacle still inside with antique fabric under the glass. The closed suspension ring is 'kited' or faceted.
+ All the details
I believe this unusual locket to be 'Pinchbeck'. Pinchbeck is an alloy invented in the early 1700s by one Christopher Pinchbeck - so close to gold in color and weight that it is virtually indistinguishable and retains its bright color with age.
Size: An extra small locket, .5 x .6 inches or 12 x 15mm and 5mm in thickness.
Age: early to mid 1800s
Weight: 2.3gms (without the chain)
Presented on a new 20 inch or 51cm chain in 14ct gold fill, stamped to the clasp. Photograph 3 shows the locket and chain on a life size torso.
Condition: Excellent. The locket closes perfectly with no gaps and the hinge is sturdy and working as it should. A strong little locket with no missing enamel pattern - looks barely used.
1. The black patches showing on the inside lid of the open locket are reflections in the polished gold - the lid is perfect, not black.
2. The glass bezel does indeed come out but is not easily removed - it has to be carefully edged out with a sharp blade (a jeweller could do this for you)
An intriguing little locket, deep enough to hold a special token or memento - this piece has a definite sense of history about it.
