A dramatic and gorgeous Victorian locket that is completely reversible, with highly polished 'bullseye' agate on one side and a convex polished magnifying glass on the other.
Worn smooth, fatly rounded and wonderful to hold.
+ All the details
Unmarked sterling silver, testing very positively as 925 silver. The glossy black Scottish agate cabochon has a fine line of brilliant blue-white meandering around the edge. There is a removable silver rim on the inside of the agate cover.
The thick convex glass magnifies any contents beautifully - this could be an image or very pretty with a daily flower or memento. (Shown with a piece of antique sari silk inside.) The receptacle is approximately 4mm deep.
Size: 1.15 x 1.3 inches (29 x 33mm) and rounding out to approximately 14mm thickness. The drop from the chain including the thick silver suspension ring is 40mm.
Age: mid 1800s.
Weight: 21.6 gms (without the chain)
Condition: Very, very good. No chips to the stone, only minor wear to the glass - no abrasion or fogging, no chips. The integral hinge is excellent, the locket closes well and stays closed. There is fine age related pitting to the silver, part of its natural patina and very beautiful. A strong locket.
Presented on a new 30 inch or 76cm sterling silver chain, stamped 925 to the clasp. Shown on a life size torso in image 6 and 7, agate side out and glass side out.
An amazing piece of Victoriana, somewhat rare in this condition. A true beauty of great quality.
