A very elegant Edwardian gold locket in ten carat solid gold, made early last century and still beautiful - a special piece that would be perfect as a bridal locket.
This expertly made antique locket has a finely hand chased design to the front with swirling scrolls and Forget-me-not flower. The integral hinge is amazing, almost invisible to the eye and testimony to the Edwardian goldsmith's craft.
+ All the details
The locket is solid 10ct yellow gold but with the lovely rosy hue of old gold. Inside here is a heart-shaped "W&H Co." mark inside the locket - this piece was made by Wightman & Hough Co. whose very cute slogan was "There's a heart in every locket", the company operated from 1856 to 1922. For historical interest, I've included one of their advertisements in image #2.
The back of the locket is smooth polished gold and inside there are two retainer rims and the original celluloid covers. The suspension ring is original to the locket, soldered closed.
Locket Size: .9 inches or 23mm diameter and the total drop from the chain is 31mm. The slim locket is 3mm in thickness.
The locket is presented on a new 22 inch or 56cm chain, 14ct gold fill and stamped as such on the clasp. Image 3 shows the locket and chain on a life size torso.
Weight: 4.4gms without the chain (this is not a heavy locket)
Age: very early 1900s, possibly earlier.
Condition: Excellent. Closes neatly with no gaps, the beautiful integral hinge is perfect and the locket closes with a firm snap. Very minor marks to the back, no nasty dents or scratches. The inside of the locket looks to be unused.
A fine antique locket from the late Edwardian era that is very elegant. Well designed, nicely proportioned and expertly hand chased.
