A large sterling silver antique locket from the Victorian era with raised ribs inset with lacy applied silver borders. This well textured locket is wonderful to hold and very elegant on its long sterling chain.
+ All the details
Polished sterling silver. There are no silver marks (not unusual for the era) but it is testing strongly as sterling and I will guarantee this.
The back of the locket is smooth and highly polished. There are two photo rims on the inside, two fabric liners and a single glass photo cover with a replacement perspex film opposite.
The oval locket is of large size, measuring 1.5 x 1.85 inches (38 x 47mm) 62mm overall drop from the chain including the shaped bail. The locket gently shaped out on the back to approximately 8mm overall thickness.
Locket age: c1880
Weight: 56.8 grams total, 20.3 grams (locket only)
The locket suits a long chain admirably and was found on this heavy 30.75 inch (780mm) sterling silver chain. The chain is of a newer vintage than the locket, made with a Victorian style link. The chain is stamped 925 and has a series of hallmarks, too tiny to decipher. Locket and chain are shown on a life size torso in image #3
Condition: Excellent. Only mild surface wear, no nasty dings or creases, one glass has been replaced with perspex. The beautifully made hinge is in perfect working order and the locket has nice firm closure with no gaps and stays closed - a well made locket.
A wonderful piece from the Victorian era - the raised rib and central border design is intricate and lovely! The natural patina of the silver is mellow and soft, the shape lovely to handle... a remarkable locket.
