A large Edwardian era locket, highly polished silver with indigo black Greek Key pattern bands applied using the Niello technique, this is an exceptional and somewhat rare beauty.
The locket has a sliding case on a pivot bail with a cute little catch at the base that clicks firmly into place to close.
+ All the details
European silver, with a worn punch for 800 silver on the oval suspension ring. The pattern is applied using the Niello technique where a black mixture of copper, silver, and lead is inlaid into silver. 800 silver was commonly used for Niello work as it can handle extreme heat better than 925 silver.
The back is unembellished and there are two photo rims and original red paper liners on the inside.
Locket Size: 1.75 inches or 45mm diameter, gently curving out to approximately 7mm in thickness. The heavy silver suspension ring makes the total drop from the chain 55mm or 2.1 inches.
Age: very early 1900s
Weight: 13.1gms (locket only)
Presented on a new stainless steel chain 34 inches or 86cm long. Stainless steel suits the color of antique silver well and is hypoallergenic. Shown on a life size torso in image 3.
Condition: Very, very good. The front of the locket is just perfect with no enamel loss or scratching at all. The back has some very shallow dents (please see image #5);mentioned for accuracy but these do not detract in my opinion and the silver has lovely natural patina. The clasp functions well, clips easily into place and stays closed.
Niello lockets are very sought after and difficult to find in this size. This is an absolute beauty.
