A pair of superb Victorian bracelets made from Vulcanite, simply and beautifully accented with dimples of 14 ct gold.
Please Note: these are very small in size - measurements are below.
+ All the details:
Moulded from Vulcanite, also sometimes called 'ebonite', which was made by combining and heating rubber with sulphur. Invented in the 1840s, Vulcanite was very popular in Victorian jewelry. It is light and comfortable to wear.
The color is a deep chocolate brown with an olive green tint.
The bangles are hinged to open and fasten with a button that depresses an insert tongue which clicks firmly into position. Hinges can be seen in image #5.
The gold accents are testing as at least 14ct gold, 2mm in size, they are set into the vulcanite and appear to be hollow.
Both bangles are the same size, extra small - to small. Would fit a fine 5.25 inch wrist perfectly.
Interior circumference is 5.7 inches or 14.5cm
Interior diameters 4.3cm x 5.3cm (oval so that they do not turn on the wrist)
The bangles are 8mm wide and 6mm thick.
Weight: 15.4 grams total
Condition: Excellent. The gold dimples next to the hinges are slightly worn on top otherwise great. The Vulcanite is smooth, no chips or scratches, the hinges and clasps are strong and working perfectly.
Graceful, understated and beautiful, these bracelets are a rare find. Did they belong to a woman with a fine wrist or were they mourning bracelets for a young girl? Intriguing...
