A sterling silver cushion locket from the Victorian era, hand chased to the front with an all-over pattern of interlaced ferns. This is an excellent quality locket with well made, strong fittings.
In the sentimental language of Victorian jewelry, the fern symbolised Fascination and when used in times of mourning, Sincerity.

The Locket:
Sterling silver, no silver marks are present (not unusual for the era) but the locket is testing very strongly for sterling silver and guaranteed to be such. There are two photo frames with new black backing cards on the inside - the frames are testing as silver plated (this is usually for added strength).
The locket has a shaped, articulated bail, ensuring it always 'sits' well.
Size: The large size oval locket measures 1.33 x 1.77 inches (35 x 45mm) with the silver bail adding another 21.5m to the length - overall drop from the chain 6cm. The locket gently rounds out to approximately 10mm thickness.
Age: c.1880.
Weight: 11.5 grams (without the chain)
Condition: Excellent. Only mild surface wear to the back. The lovely integral hinge is strong and the locket closes tightly with no gaps and stays shut - the covers are so well fitted that the seam is nearly invisible.
The Chain: The locket is presented on a stainless steel rolo chain 34 inches or 86cm long. Stainless steel suits the color of vintage silver well and is hypoallergenic. The locket and chain are shown on a life size torso in photograph 4.
Janne's Notes:
A very attractive large locket from the Victorian era, the overall pattern is gorgeous. This is a well crafted locket that is smooth and lovely to handle.
